Review: What a Boy Wants by Nyrae Dawn

This is the 33rd book I've read this year.

Courtesy of watching his mom’s relationships, Sebastian Hawkins knows what girls need to do to get a guy. He has what he considers a PHD in hooking up. When he needs extra cash for a car, Sebastian starts up an online venture as The Hook-up Doctor, to anonymously help girls land the guy of their dreams. Of course, his services don’t offer a happily-ever-after guarantee. He’s seen firsthand getting together never means staying together.

And then he falls in love…

With the last girl he would expect…

Totally not in his game plan.

Suddenly, Sebastian finds himself muddled in the game he’s always prided himself on. He can’t even pick up girls at parties anymore! Why would anyone want to be in love when it turns you into a stuttering, screwed-up, mess with really lame stalker tendencies? Stalking? Totally not his gig.

But the Hook-up Doctor won’t let himself go down easily. He’s always known how to give a girl what she wants and now it’s time to figure out what a boy wants… and he definitely plans on getting it.

Christian beliefs: Sebastian thanks God once.

Other belief systems: Nope.

Language: The S word, the H word, the D word, the A word. Drove me mad. But I guess that's just how they talk I guess.

Romance: Sebastian is the Hook-Up doctor. So he helps people hook up by giving them advice they have to pay for. He also hooks himself up, and he does it often. And it grossed me out. Of course, no one ever had sex, but there was a lot of kissing and touching going on....
And Sebastian falls in love, so they touch and kiss each other. And in my opinion, I wouldn't want to be touched like that until I was married...but that's just me.

Any other bad things: They go to a party, and Aspen gets drunk, and a guy takes advantage of that, but Sebastian saves her! (yay!)

Comments:

Good points:

Nyrea's writing is really good. She really knows how to get people close to her characters. In some books, I don't feel the main character, I'm feeling all the other characters. But with Sebastian, I could really understand him.
Aspen was such a creative name!! At first, I thought it was another guy...lol.
Pris sounded like me. If someone was hurting my friend, they were going to get it.
And Jaden was super cool, him and Sebastian just got along so well!!

I think Nyrae did a great job getting inside a guy's head when she's a girl. And she knew what a guy was like too. She knew that they were very visual creatures, and she just nailed it.  Everything my mom ever told me about guys was in this book. lol

Negative points:

I didn't like all the kissing and touching. And swearing of course, but that was about it.

This book was a very quick read, so I don't know what else I would say. lol

Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars!

Review: Half-Blood by Jennifer L. Armentrout

This is the 32nd book I've read this year.

The Hematoi descend from the unions of gods and mortals, and the children of two Hematoi-pure-bloods-have godlike powers. Children of Hematoi and mortals-well, not so much. Half-bloods only have two options: become trained Sentinels who hunt and kill daimons or become servants in the homes of the pures. Seventeen-year-old Alexandria would rather risk her life fighting than waste it scrubbing toilets, but she may end up slumming it anyway. There are several rules that students at the Covenant must follow. Alex has problems with them all, but especially rule
#1:Relationships between pures and halfs are forbidden. Unfortunately, she's crushing hard on the totally hot pure-blood Aiden. But falling for Aiden isn't her biggest problem--staying alive long enough to graduate the Covenant and become a Sentinel is. If she fails in her duty, she faces a future worse than death or slavery: being turned into a daimon, and being hunted by Aiden.
And that would kind of suck.

Christian beliefs: Nope.

Other belief systems: They're the decedents of the Greek gods. Well...mostly, the REAL demigods are gone, and these people don't have as much power, they don't even know which god is related to them. There are the Pure bloods, and the half-bloods, the Pure bloods are the first class people, if the boat was sinking, they would be in the lifeboats first. The half-bloods technically do all the dirty work for the Pure bloods, and if a half and a pure are caught dating and such, the half would be in HUGE trouble, but the Pure would be let off easy. I know...totally not fair.

Language: The usual list of words....the D word, the H word, the A word. It seems like Jennifer's books always have a lot of words. And instead of using the LORD's name in vain, they use GodS.

Romance: This is another book that has a girl who's pretty much willing to give up her virginity...Alex talks about how she's irritated that she's the only virgin at the Convent. (who does that??!!)  And Alex "almost" loses her virginity, and she's very upset about it: "I was seconds away from losing my virginity, FREAKING seconds." There's also kissing, and hugging, and a lot of guys like Alex, and some use her as ways to get their girlfriend to be jealous. Of course, Alex doesn't let those kind of guys touch her, which I'm proud of her for that.

Any other bad things: There are these things called daimons. (pronouced, DEA-MON) And they kill mortals for fun, and drain half-bloods of there blood, which has aether in it, which is what they like to eat, and they can turn pure bloods into daimons if they wanted. It's a very sad process.
People die, and Alex and other people get tagged, which is where a daimon bites you, and leaves a scar.

Comments:

Good points:

I like reading Jennifer's books. They have cool and new ideas. Half-Blood was better written than Obsidian was. And it was also a very quick read, it didn't take me long to finish this book. (2 days) and I loved the new twist on the Greek myths and such. (but Percy Jackson will always be my fave.)

Alex is cool, she has a kick butt tude, she doesn't care what comes out of her mouth. Aiden was SUPER cool, I'm Team Aiden all the way, and I'm usually not the calm sensitive boy team. But Aiden was kind and nice, and you could really tell that he cared about Alex, and did what was best for her. (most of the time...)
Seth didn't come in for awhile, but when he did, I loved him right away. Alex and him insult each other, even though he's the Apollyon. Who has mad power and all that really cool stuff. (but I'm still rooting for Aiden.)

Since Alex was pulled out of the Convent by her mom for 3 years. (then her mother died. :() Alex has to start her training over, with the help of Aiden. Some of the other half and pure bloods are mean and rude to her, and since Alex isn't afraid to say anything, or hit anything, they get on her nerves alot, and Alex almost gets expelled, and sent to be a servant, at her step father's home. So most of the story is about her trying to finish training, and get back on track before school starts, and not getting kicked out of school.

Negative points:

I don't like all the language they use, what are the chances that every single person at the Convent swears? And of course, the adults don't. And the fact that people can just throw the word virginity around like it's nothing drives me nuts. Some people don't understand that your not supposed to 'loose' it before you actually get married. It was sad to how Alex think like she wanted it gone.

But, all in all, I liked this book, and I will be ordering Pure here soon. ;D

Rating: 4 out of  5 stars.

Review: EVERNEATH by Brodi Ashton

This is the 31st book I've read this year.

Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath, where immortals Feed on the emotions of despairing humans. Now she's returned- to her old life, her family, her friends- before being banished back to the underworld... this time forever.

She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can't find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.

Nikki longs to spend these months reconnecting with her boyfriend, Jack, the one person she loves more than anything. But there's a problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who first enticed her to the Everneath, has followed Nikki to the mortal world. And he'll do whatever it takes to bring her back- this time as his queen.

As Nikki's time grows short and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she's forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole's...

Christian beliefs: Nope.

Other belief systems: This book was a retelling of the myth of Persephone. You know, the one about Hades liking Persephone, and how he just had to have her, so he kidnapped her...did you get it? Ok. So there's myths about the Ancient Greeks, which I love.

Language: The S shirt is used, and so is the D word. But that was it. :)))) And it wasn't used all the time, just when it was 'needed'.

Romance: Kissing, hugging, nothing too forward, which I really liked. :)

Any other bad things: The Everneath is like hell, so every human that goes to down with a Everling is liked a Forfit. And once the Feed is gone, they either get to Return to their old life, or go to the Tunnels. And if you choose to Return, the Tunnels will come for in in 6 months. So it might not be something to read to a child, but I didn't scare me.
The Feed happens once every 100 years. Where a Everling takes a Forfit down and they have to stay in a coccoon like place, and the Everling will Feed off their emotions. It keeps the Everlings alive.

Comments:

Good points:

I had been following Brodi on Twitter for awhile, but I never got around to acutally reading her book. I hadn't even read the summary yet. But when I read the summary, I was like...oh yeah, Greek myths. And since Percy Jackson, I hadn't really read any good Greek myth stories. And I needed one. And this was did a pretty good job of it.

I loved the whole 'love triangle' thing. It wasn't really a love triangle but Cole and Jack both cared about Nikki, but she only really felt drawn to Jack, even though she had spent 100 years with Cole in the Everling.

I couldn't really connect with Nikki very well, I felt like I could connect with Cole way better than any other character. Nikki seemed quiet in most places, and then happy in others. And when she spoke, there wasn't any emotion in her voice really. But she did seem like someone I would like to be friends with.

Jack is the name of my pet goldfish, so my fish was in love with Nikki. ;) I wasn't really rooting for Jack, I'm a bad boy girl. Even though I would never want to date one, so I was all for Cole. And Cole had such a great name, it just fit with her personality so well. And he had blonde hair! Ah! Another quality I love in my fictional crushes. ;) (that and curly hair...)

Negative points:

I didn't like how the scenes went really fast, they sound like my books with their in the editing process, fast, and not staying in one scene long enough. I also didn't like how Nikki didn't just tell her dad where she'd been. It probably would have not made him think she had been using drugs and all that. And how he made her go to community work, parents like that drive me nuts. O.o lol

All in all, I really enjoyed this book, but the ending was so sad! Everbound better come out soon, and the novella from Cole's point of view! :p

Rating: 4 and a half stars out of 5.
